The First 24 Hours After Birth: A Gentle Guide to Self-Care

The First 24 Hours After Birth: A Gentle Guide to Self-Care

The moment your baby enters the world, everything shifts. You’re no longer just you — you’re someone’s mum. And while the love can feel instant and overwhelming, those first 24 hours can also feel like a blur of emotions, exhaustion, and adjustment. Amidst the whirlwind, one thing often gets left behind: you.

So here’s your gentle reminder — self-care still matters, even now. Especially now.

1. Rest when you can (even if it’s just for 10 minutes)

You’ll hear this one over and over again — “sleep when the baby sleeps” — but in the first 24 hours, it’s more like “close your eyes when you get a moment.” Labour is intense. Whether you gave birth vaginally or via caesarean, your body has done something incredible. Even lying still, taking deep breaths, or asking your partner to hold the baby while you rest your eyes can help.

2. Drink water (seriously)

Hydration is essential, especially if you’re breastfeeding. It can be easy to forget to drink, so keep a big water bottle nearby. Electrolyte drinks or coconut water can also help replenish your energy. You’re doing a lot, mama — even sitting and feeding your baby is work.

3. Feed yourself (little and often)

It might be hard to stomach a full meal at first, so try easy snacks: toast, fruit, crackers with cheese, or a smoothie. Think of food as fuel — not just for feeding your baby, but for helping you recover and feel like yourself again.

4. Ask for help (and accept it)

Whether you’re in hospital or at home, people will want to help. Let them. Ask for water, a heat pack, an extra blanket. If someone offers to take photos, bring you snacks, or hold the baby while you shower — say yes.

5. Use your postpartum essentials

This is where those practical items come into play. Ice and heat packs can help relieve pain and swelling. Comfy postpartum underwear, breast pads, and a gentle perineum spray or balm can make all the difference. You’ve just done something huge — take care of the parts of you that feel sore, stretched, or raw.

6. Breathe and be kind to yourself

You might feel on top of the world, or completely overwhelmed. Probably both at once. Your hormones are shifting, your body is adjusting, and this tiny human is depending on you — it’s a lot. Be gentle with yourself. Cry if you need to. Laugh when you can. This is all part of it.

You don’t need to “bounce back.” You just need time, space, and support.
The first 24 hours aren’t about getting everything right. They’re about slowing down, soaking it in, and giving yourself the same love and care you’re giving your baby.

You’ve got this, mama.
